Climate Change

Western Visayas (Region VI) is highly vulnerable to climate-related disasters such as drought. Data from the World Bank and national rainfall stations indicate that droughts reduce food consumption and spike food prices, with a 9% impact specifically in Western Visayas.

Poverty

The region is the only one outside of Luzon with a 9.8% rate among families and 13.7% among the overall population, affecting an estimated 119,000 families and 664,000 individuals. The average monthly family threshold stands at Php 13,801.

Inflation

Economic pressures due to inflation affect household budgets, especially for staple foods. In 2023, Western Visayas recorded 9.8% family and 13.7% population poverty incidences, while inflation caused a percentage of families and individuals to fall below basic food needs.

Agricultural Vulnerability

Frequent typhoons and droughts damage crops—the backbone of local agriculture. Losses have reached around Php 1.7 billion, putting additional strain on food production and economic stability in the region.

What can we do to counteract this?

Addressing the challenges requires focused strategies and investments across different areas.

Climate Change

Prioritize investments in hydraulic power plants to utilize the region’s abundant water resources while reducing energy costs. Implement sustainable practices that limit greenhouse gas emissions, conserve natural resources, and minimize waste.

Poverty

Increase job opportunities and secure sustainable wages—especially for minority groups—to lift families out of poverty. Invest in quality education and social protections to sustain economic growth.

Inflation

Employ monetary policy adjustments via regulated money supply and lower interest rates. Use open market operations and trade policies to stabilize prices while enhancing disaster response mechanisms to mitigate external shocks.

Agricultural Vulnerability

Promote innovative use of local fruits and vegetables and support policies by the Department of Agriculture to enhance production and stabilize the food supply, reducing reliance on imports.
